Shipping Generators and Gensets from China to the USA
Generator sets combine the constraints of machinery with those of an engine. The unit is heavy and needs proper lifting and load spreading; the engine brings fuel and oil, which raise packing and documentation questions; and the starting batteries, where fitted, add a battery item to the shipment. The fuel question is settled first. Units may ship with the tank drained, with a residual amount, or with fuel aboard, and which applies determines the packing, the marking and what the carrier will accept. Draining is common for international carriage, but it is the manufacturer's instruction rather than a shipping preference, and the receiving plan should account for a unit that arrives dry. Generators are frequently supplied in a container-sized enclosure, which simplifies handling but not weight. A containerized genset can be lifted as a unit and may travel as a single heavy piece rather than as conventional cargo, so lifting points, spreader capacity and the receiving site's crane are all part of the plan.
Shipping Methods
Selected against verified dimensions and weight.
Cargo Details
Packed dimensions, gross weight, quantity and loading details.
Documentation
Invoice, packing list and transport document.
Delivery
Port-to-port, port-to-door or door-to-door, subject to availability.
Generator Types We Coordinate
Enclosure, fuel arrangement and weight set the handling method, so the plan starts from the unit drawing.
Standby and Prime Power Gensets
Diesel sets for data center backup, usually heavy and crated or skid-mounted.
Containerized Generator Sets
Units built into an ISO envelope, handled as a single heavy lift.
Gas and Dual-Fuel Generators
Units with different fuel arrangements and corresponding instruction sets.
Mobile and Trailer-Mounted Units
Wheeled sets that may move under their own running gear rather than crated.
What Matters When Shipping Generators
Fuel and lifting are decided before the unit leaves the factory; both are difficult to change afterwards.
- Confirm the fuel arrangement. Drained, residual or fuelled is a manufacturer's instruction, and it changes the packing, the marking and what can be carried.
- Starting batteries are a separate item. Where batteries are fitted or supplied, their chemistry and condition need the same treatment as a standalone battery shipment.
- Lifting points and site access must match. A containerized genset is a heavy lift; confirm crane capacity at both ends before booking.
- Oil and coolant should be controlled. Engine fluids left in place should be sealed and the unit marked so it travels in the intended attitude.
- Exhaust and air intakes need protection. Openings should be covered against the ingress of water and packing material.
- Moisture protection matters on a long sea leg. Engines and control panels both suffer from condensation in transit.
Generators and Gensets Shipping Options
Loading method is set by unit weight and dimensions before freight rate is considered.
Breakbulk / Heavy Lift
Units beyond container payload or dimensions.
Flat Rack
Heavy and oversized units, secured to the platform.
Full Container Load (FCL)
Containerized units and smaller equipment within payload limits.
Lifting points must be confirmed at origin, both ports and the receiving site.

What Affects Generators and Gensets Shipping Costs?
The cost depends on the cargo specifications and the full transportation route. A reliable quotation requires shipment-specific details.
- Dimensions and gross weight
- Number of units and total volume
- Factory location in China
- US destination port or ZIP code
- Equipment type and loading requirements
- Final delivery and site access
Information Needed for a Shipping Quote
- Item name and model
- Quantity
- Packed dimensions (L × W × H)
- Gross weight
- Factory city and postal code, if available
- US destination city and ZIP code
- Cargo-ready date
- Photos or loading specifications, if available
Generators and Gensets Customs Clearance in the USA
Importing this equipment into the United States requires accurate shipment information and appropriate customs entry documentation. Requirements depend on the specific equipment, its function, origin, transaction details, and applicable US import regulations.
Commonly Required Information
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Bill of lading
- Unit weight, dimensions and configuration
- Manufacturer documentation
Generator entry information should describe the set as supplied, including whether an engine, alternator and enclosure are present and whether the unit is new or used, since used machinery can raise separate questions. Provide the manufacturer's documentation for your customs broker.
Before Shipping Generators and Gensets: What to Confirm
Unit Weight and Dimensions
Confirm from the drawing, not from memory, before the transport method is chosen.
Manufacturer's Transport Instruction
Confirm transport condition and attitude — fluid levels, gas blanket, restrictions on lying the unit down.
Crane and Rigging at Both Ends
Confirm capacity, reach and rigging at origin, at both ports and at the receiving site.
Receiving Preparation
Confirm who will unload, what equipment is available, and what commissioning work follows arrival.

Generators and Gensets Shipping FAQs
Can a generator be shipped with fuel in the tank?
That depends on the manufacturer's transport instruction and on what the carrier will accept. Units commonly travel drained for international carriage, and the receiving plan should account for a unit arriving without fuel.
Are containerized gensets shipped as normal cargo?
They are handled as a heavy unit rather than as general cargo. The enclosure allows the set to be lifted as one piece, but the weight still requires confirmed crane capacity and lifting points at both ends.
