Shipping VFDs and Inverters from China to the USA
Variable frequency drives sit between two worlds: they are electronic equipment in terms of handling, but their weight and metal housings make them behave more like machinery in terms of freight. A pallet of drives can be both static-sensitive and heavy enough to require proper load spreading. They are also frequently shipped alongside the motors they control, which creates a mixed consignment — heavy items and delicate items in one booking. Separating the two within the container, rather than stacking drives under motors, is usually what determines whether the electronics arrive undamaged.
Shipping Methods
Selected against verified dimensions and weight.
Cargo Details
Packed dimensions, gross weight, quantity and loading details.
Documentation
Invoice, packing list and transport document.
Delivery
Port-to-port, port-to-door or door-to-door, subject to availability.
Drive and Inverter Types We Coordinate
Form factor and voltage class decide the packing method and, where applicable, the transport requirements.
Low-Voltage VFDs
Wall-mounted and cabinet-mount drives in the common power ranges.
Medium-Voltage Drives
Larger assemblies that frequently ship as crated, sectioned units.
Soft Starters
Motor starting equipment, often sharing cartons with control accessories.
Filters, Reactors and Braking Units
Heavy accessory items that are best palletised separately from drives.
What Matters When Shipping VFDs and Inverters
Drive failures in transit usually trace back to static, moisture or mechanical load — not to the voyage itself.
- Anti-static packing is expected. Drives are sensitive to electrostatic discharge and should not be shipped in plain cartons without protection.
- Keep drives out from under heavy cargo. When motors and drives share a shipment, placement inside the container matters more than the packaging alone.
- Moisture protection on ocean freight. Electronics benefit from desiccant and a moisture barrier, particularly on long sea legs.
- Ventilation and enclosure openings. Drives with cooling fans or open vents should be protected from the ingress of dust and packing material.
- Weight concentration. Accessories such as reactors and filters are heavy; palletising them separately keeps drive cartons from being crushed.
- Confirm configuration before packing. Units programmed or configured for a specific application should have their settings documented before the shipment leaves.
VFDs and Inverters Shipping Options
Mode selection is driven by value, volume and how quickly the goods are needed.
Air Freight
Common for high-value components in small volumes.
LCL Consolidation
Shared container space for smaller consignments.
Full Container Load (FCL)
Dedicated container for larger mixed consignments.
Where batteries are involved, mode availability is confirmed before booking.

VFDs and Inverters Customs Clearance in the USA
Importing this equipment into the United States requires accurate shipment information and appropriate customs entry documentation. Requirements depend on the specific equipment, its function, origin, transaction details, and applicable US import regulations.
Commonly Required Information
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Air waybill or bill of lading
- Itemised description by model
- Manufacturer and country of origin
Drive description should reflect the unit's function and rating rather than a general electronics description. Confirm the intended entry description with your customs broker, particularly where drives and motors are shipped together.
Before Shipping VFDs and Inverters: What to Confirm
Supplier List
Confirm which suppliers are involved and whether their cartons are to be consolidated into one shipment.
Packing Requirements
Confirm anti-static packing, battery content and any fragile items that need separate handling.
Itemised Packing List
Confirm the packing list will reconcile line by line against the order before cartons are closed.
Serial Numbers
Agree who records serial numbers at packing, and on which items.

VFDs and Inverters Shipping FAQs
Can drives and motors ship in the same container?
Yes, and it is common. The important part is placement: keep drive cartons out from under heavy motors and avoid stacking dense items on top of electronics.
Should drives be removed from panels before shipping?
Where a drive is already mounted in a panel, leaving it installed is usually the better choice provided the panel is properly crated and the drive is protected. Removing and repacking creates its own risks.
