When an importer asks for a DDP rate on a full container out of Dongguan, the number that causes trouble later is rarely the duty rate. It is the phrase “all-in”.

On a consolidated shipment, surprises get shared across several shippers. On an FCL, you are the only one paying. A container that gets pulled for inspection, or that sits at the terminal past free time, runs up charges that never appeared in the quote. So the useful question is not what the DDP rate includes. It is what it stops covering.

Dongguan: three industries, three different containers

Dongguan’s export base is deep, but three clusters account for most of what moves to the United States. Each one builds a different container, and that is what makes this a Dongguan shipment rather than a generic one.

Industry Where it sits What it does to the container
Electromechanical — small appliances and molds Chang’an, Qingxi, Tangxia Splits in two. Small appliances are bulky and light, so volume runs out first. Molds are dense steel, so weight runs out first. A shipment containing both needs the two treated separately
Furniture Houjie, Dalingshan Fills by volume long before it reaches the payload. Cartons are large and irregular, and stack height is limited by what the frame will take
Mid-to-high-end knitwear Humen Relatively light for its volume, higher value per kilogram, and extremely seasonal — changeover weeks concentrate a season’s output onto a few sailings

That split inside electromechanical is the one worth planning around. A forty-foot container loaded with small appliances will cube out with the weight gauge barely moving. Load the same container with molds and you can be over the road weight limit with space still visible. If your shipment contains both, tell your forwarder which is which before booking, because the stow plan changes.

Furniture also carries a compliance point that catches importers late. Wood products entering the United States may be subject to a Lacey Act declaration covering the plant species in the product. It is not an ocean freight issue, but it is a documentation issue, and it is better raised with your customs broker before the container ships than after it arrives.

Which port the container actually leaves from

Dongguan sits on the Pearl River, roughly between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and it has its own port at Humen. Humen handles barge and feeder traffic; for a deep-sea FCL, cargo generally trucks to a larger gateway.

In practice that means Yantian or Shekou in Shenzhen, or Nansha in Guangzhou. Which one is used depends mostly on where the factory is. A supplier in Humen or Machong is closer to Nansha. A supplier in Qingxi or Tangxia is closer to Yantian. The difference is not cosmetic — it changes the trucking leg, and the trucking leg is what sets how early the container has to be released against the port cut-off.

Ask your supplier which port they intend to use, and pass it to your forwarder before booking. It also affects the destination terminal you may need to collect from, and on a DDP shipment it affects what your supplier’s forwarder has quoted for.

For how the container type itself is chosen, the container types and sizes guide covers the payload and door-opening limits — both of which matter more on furniture than on knitwear.

Where “all-in” stops

A DDP quote for an FCL normally covers the ocean freight, the import duty, customs clearance and the delivery to the named place. What sits outside it varies by forwarder, and that variation is where the arguments come from.

The items most often excluded, and most often forgotten:

Inspection charges. If the container is selected for examination, the costs of moving it to an exam site, the exam itself and the return run to the terminal are usually billed on top. This is more likely on high-value cargo, which puts the electromechanical category at higher risk than knitwear.

Demurrage and detention. Different charges, easy to confuse. Demurrage accrues while the container is still at the terminal. Detention accrues once the container has been released but is not returned within free time. On an FCL, both are paid by whoever holds the contract with the line — and on a DDP shipment that is not necessarily the party you assume.

Chassis and extended storage at destination. Billed by the terminal and the trucker rather than the carrier, and frequently outside the quoted scope.

A change in duty rates between quote and entry. Additional tariff measures can move between the date you are quoted and the date the entry is filed. Who absorbs that difference should be settled in writing, not discovered on the invoice.

Ask for the exclusions in writing before you accept the number. A rate that comes with a clear list of what is not included is more useful than a lower rate that arrives with no boundary at all.

When DDP is the wrong answer

DDP is a good fit for importers without a US customs presence, and it is the reason Dongguan suppliers can quote a delivered price at all. It is not automatically the lowest-cost route, and in three situations it works against you.

You already have a US entity and a continuous bond. Once you have those, being your own importer of record is usually cheaper, because you are no longer paying a third party to carry the entry.

Your product needs US certification. Small appliances typically need a recognised safety mark, and products with radios or batteries bring their own requirements. Under DDP the delivery obligation transfers, but the responsibility for the product meeting US rules does not transfer with it.

You want control over classification and declared value. Under DDP, someone else files the entry. If your margin depends on how the goods are classified, that decision is worth keeping.

Frequently asked

How long does an FCL take from Dongguan to the US? It depends on the port pair and the service, and it moves with congestion. The figure that matters for planning is door to door, which includes the trucking leg to the port, the sailing, the clearance window and the inland delivery.

Can one DDP shipment cover several Dongguan suppliers? Yes, and it is common — suppliers in Houjie and Chang’an can be consolidated onto one container. It does mean the packing list has to identify each supplier’s goods separately.

Who is the importer of record under DDP? It depends on how the shipment is structured, and it is the single most important question to settle in writing before the container is picked up. The full DDP guide works through the options.

Is Dongguan the same as shipping from Guangzhou? No. The two cities export different product mixes and their cargo often leaves through different ports. The comparison is set out in shipping from Guangzhou.

What a workable quote needs from you

Four details do most of the work on a Dongguan FCL: the factory’s town or district, the product type and its approximate HS heading, the packed dimensions and gross weight, and your cargo-ready date. With those, the routing and the DDP scope can both be pinned down rather than estimated.

The wider sequence — booking, documentation, clearance and delivery — sits under ocean freight.
